Yes and yes ;-).

You are probably using a kernel headers from a distribution like Red Hat or Mandrake which have different kernel version file than the one distributed from kernel.org. Makefile in Host AP driver tries to determine the installation directory from kernel header files and it apparently fails to do this from modified sources.

I'm not going to support every possible patched kernel release, but I could modify Makefile to at least notice these cases and give proper warning about it and some instructions on how to install the driver manually.
