WDS question

I just have a quick question regarding WDS. From what I've seen so far, it looks as if BSSes in a ESS can only communicate via WDS if they are all within the service area of one another. Is this true? For example, given the following configuration:

AP A <-------------> AP B <-----------------> AP C
           WDS                     WDS

Where A is out of range of C, but B is within range of both. Is it possible for A to communicate with C using WDS?
