There is no listen interval field in the IEEE 802.11 header, but I'm assuming you mean the Listen Interval field of association request payload. It is used to inform the AP about how often the STA wakes to listen to beacon frames. AP could then expire buffered frames if the station has not polled for then during a time interval longer than the listen interval.

I haven't checked what the firmware does (this is fully controlled by the secondary firmware). I have understood IEEE 802.11 standard so that the AP can send all buffered broad/multicast frames after beacon with DTIM.
