If you dig into the PDFs from Jim's zip files, you'll note the f/w is
only for HFA3842/3-based cards.
I just upgraded an older HFA3841-based card (Netgear FA401), it came with STA 00.08.03 and is now 01.03.04 (with the same primary factory 00.03.00 f/w). This was using the an Intersil OEM Windows updater along with HEX files c/o <ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MA401v200.zip>.
On the note of 1.4.9 f/w, I have upgraded a number Senao (200mW PCMCIA) and Sparklan (50mW PCI) NICs fine. Do note, this is with a Windows uploader (which is smart enough to barf on incorrect HEX files and such).
