There used to be more differences before, but I think linux-wlan-ng has removed some extra code from packet handling in the latest versions. I haven't checked very closely what has changed in linux-wlan-ng, but I would assume that command completion handling might be somewhat more optimized in current Host AP snapshot. Anyway, most time is probably spent on copying packet payload between the host memory and Prism2 card (since there is no DMA available for this) and the driver cannot really do much about this..

I implemented RAM download mainly for downloading new versions of secondary station firmware, not for tertiary AP firmware. However, it seems to also work with AP firmware--although, there is not much support for it nor have I tested it that much. You will need to contact Intersil for the AP firmware (but be prepared to pay something like $20k for access to it; even though the firmware itself will be freely downloadable after you get access to suitable web site).
