Oh my; Your WMP11 is actually broken? Does it work on a Windows machine? A different Linux/BSD box?
The D-Link PCI card is known to only work in PCI v2.2 compliant systems -- you mentioned yours is an 'old' machine. Maybe that's why? You could possibly return that, depending on how long you've had it. Or there's Ebay. I'm sorry to hear about that.
I'd stay away from the USR PC Card + PLX cards. The PC Card portion whacked out my Windows 2000 Pro box. The mouse skipped like the system was hanging every two seconds for a second. Very useless.
