This is probably recommended in any case.

As stated a bit earlier, a 2.4.20 prerelease kernel, or a patch for the kernel for a newer version of the Wireless Extensions. Patches are available at
http://www.hpl.hp.com/personal/Jean_Tourrilhes/Linux/Tools.html . It would appear the WE patches need to be applied in order, so, if you're using 2.4.18, you should have WE 13, and will need to get at least the patch for v14, and perhaps even for v15 if you want to try that.
