Which version of the driver? That command was used in 2002-05-19, but not in the later versions (see ChangeLog). You can setup monitor mode with 'iwpriv wlan0 monitor 2' (or 3 for Prism2-headers). You should also note, that the old monitor mode 1 used netlink socket whereas modes 2 and 3 use wlan0 device by changing the device type to include more headers. If you have latest wireless tools version, you can also use 'iwconfig wlan0 mode Monitor', which will be the recommended method for configuring monitor mode in the future.
