They are packets for which the card did not receive an acknowledgement before retry limit (4 or 8 tries if I remember correctly) was reached.

These are probably also from failed transmissions (e.g., invalid frame checksunm).

If it stops working totally (i.e., no packets get through), then it is not exactly normal. I have seen various cases in which the card seems to die suddenly (it does not seem to respond to anything before reset) under load. Most of these have been fixed in the latest driver, but there may well be some problems left.
Retry and FCS errors are quite normal, especially if the stations are near the limit of the radio coverage.
