I have tried between my Apple iBook (Orinoco card) and a PC w/ Windows 98, and Netgear Prism2 PCMCIA card. In AdHoc mode, they would only negotiate 2Mbit, and talking to HostAP in Master mode, they will do the full 11 Mbit. So maybe it is in the AdHoc standard ? That would allow them to sell APs to more users.
