If you are running as a client in station (Infrastructure / Managed) mode, then yes, everything is handled by the firmware, so the driver does not get any info frames other than your standard association / disassociation messages.

If you are running as a Host AP in Master / AP mode, then the authentication and association code is used to tell the Client weather they are allowed to associate or not.

If you are interested in the low-level details regarding this process, you may request the (free) Intersil developers manual from Intersil, after signing an NDA.
